Anna Ancher Conquers London
Anna Ancher is one of Denmark’s most renowned and groundbreaking artists — a true gem that instantly brings to mind Skagen, the artist community, and the unique light between two seas that she and the Skagen painters conjured up in one magnificent painting after another.
Now, Anna Ancher makes her very first appearance in London ever, at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, in a special exhibition of 40 paintings titled Anna Ancher: Painting the Light. The exhibition runs from 4 th November 2025 till 8 th March 2026.
Known for her luminous paintings, bold use of colour, and remarkable ability to capture light, Anna Ancher offers a fresh perspective in art, spanning from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. Born in Skagen in 1859, Ancher became a central figure in the artist colony, where a new poetic realism evolved over several decades until her death in 1935.
Anna Ancher is “world-famous in Denmark” but almost unknown in Britain. This will now be remedied with a grand exhibition that has been in the making for several years, following close collaboration with Skagens Museum and loans from The Hirschsprung Collection.
Get a special preview of the exhibition when the Danish Church in London, together with a number of Danish organizations, invites you to a lecture in English by Helen Hillyard, curator at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
The evening offers a colourful talk, beautiful images, insights into the artist’s life in Skagen, and analysis of her artistic techniques and perspectives.
There will be plenty of opportunity to relax and chat over gløgg and æbleskiver (mulled wine and Danish doughnuts) or whatever you might fancy from the bar.
The evening is made possible in collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy, DK-UK, KFUK, the Anglo-Danish Society and Danish Women.
