Danish Lessons

The Danish Church offers Danish lessons for both children and adults, regardless of their background, religion or nationality.

Our lessons take place in a friendly and informal setting, where learning, a sense of community and Danish culture go hand in hand.

Lørdagsskolen.

Since 1970, Lørdagsskolen (Saturday School) has been providing Danish lessons for school-age children and adults at various levels.

The school meets every other Saturday afternoon from September until Easter. Lessons are taught by experienced volunteer teachers and focus on developing students’ ability to speak, read and write Danish.

The teaching is based on everyday situations, while also introducing students to Danish culture and society. Our aim is to help students communicate more confidently with their Danish family and friends, as well as build new connections with other Danes in London.

A sense of community is an important part of Lørdagsskolen. Each teaching day begins with everyone gathering in the church to sing a couple of songs together before the lessons start.

We also make Danish traditions and games a natural part of the learning experience. This allows children to explore the Danish language and culture through shared activities and enjoyable traditions. Among other things, the children take part in the Lucia procession at the church in December, while parents help organise the annual Fastelavn celebrations.

Aftenskolen.

Aftenskolen (Evening School) offers intensive Danish lessons for adults at four different levels.

Classes take place once a week on weekday evenings, from September to July, and are organised into three terms.

Our courses are taught by experienced and dedicated Danish teachers in a friendly and informal setting.

We use a variety of teaching methods, with an emphasis on speaking, listening and practical communication in Danish.

Lessons are based on authentic everyday situations and incorporate Danish culture, giving students plenty of opportunities to use the language actively.

At every level, our aim is to strengthen students’ ability to express themselves in natural, fluent Danish, with particular emphasis on spoken communication.

Why do I have to be a member of the church?

Membership is required to take part in our lessons because of our insurance arrangements and the permissions under which we are allowed to provide teaching.

Becoming a member does not mean that you are registered anywhere as a member of a religious organisation or identified as a Christian.

What level are the classes taught at, and which level is right for me?

Both schools offer teaching at different levels.

At Lørdagsskolen, children are grouped by age and divided into two groups according to their level of Danish.

Aftenskolen is the only school in London to offer four different levels of Danish tuition.

We recommend contacting the head of the schools by email to find out which class would be most suitable for you.

Can I enrol at any time?

No. At both schools, the academic year begins in September. Enrolment closes when classes are full or at the end of September, once lessons are well underway.

At Aftenskolen, beginners can only join in September, as the beginner course is planned to run throughout the academic year. If you are already at a higher level and would like to join later in the year, for example at the start of the second or third term, please contact the head of the school to find out whether this is possible.
